Instrument Installation

Receiving and Installing your Affymetrix Instrument System

The Affymetrix instrument system will be shipped to your facility by ground. Please instruct your receiving department to document any damage to the shipping containers with the shipper at the time of delivery acceptance. Please do not unpack the instruments or computer workstation.

Unpacking should only be performed by an authorized Affymetrix representative. Unpacking by any person not authorized by Affymetrix constitutes responsibility for the equipment and any damage that may have occurred during shipment or unpacking.

An Affymetrix Field Service Engineer will contact you to schedule the instrument installation. The installation takes a minimum of four hours to complete.

System Space Requirements

Please have space available for the system. The system includes four bench-top instruments (the scanner, fluidics station, hybridization oven, and computer workstation). The dimensions and weights of the components are as follows:

50 lbs
22.7 kg

System Electrical Requirements

This instrument is designed to run on 120VAC (+/- 10%) in North America and on 220VAC (+/- 10%) in Europe and 100VAC Japan. The instrument automatically adjusts to each input voltage. No adjustment is required.

Computer Configuration and Data Storage

Designed with pre-installed specialized controller boards to control the scanner and fluidics station, this Windows XP SP2 based unit (DELL Workstation) comes minimally configured with a XEON processor, a 20" Flat Screen LCD monitor, a network interface card, a CD DVD+/-RW drive, (2) HARD DRIVE, 500GB each, and 1GB MEMORY MODULE.

New User Training

A Field Application Specialist will contact you to schedule the initial training session and provide you with a list of reagents and materials to have ready for training. During this training, you will perform hybridizations of expression arrays followed by basic analysis of the results.

Your Affymetrix Field Application Specialist will provide a tested sample for the hybridizations, two Test3 Arrays and two eukaryotic expression arrays.

In addition, we recommend that you review the GeneChip® Expression Analysis Technical Manual, which lists all of the necessary reagents for preparing and hybridizing samples and order all necessary reagents from other vendors, as soon as possible.

Goals for this training include:

  • Proficiency in using the GeneChip expression assay
  • Sample preparation consulting
  • Sample processing details
  • Instrument operation
  • Probe array scanning
  • Software control
  • Basic data analysis
  • Troubleshooting all aspects of the GeneChip expression assay
  • Ability to conduct and analyze gene expression experiments independently

Thank you for choosing Affymetrix. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions regarding installation or training, please contact us.

System Space Requirements

Please have space available for the system. The HTAPS system includes the bench-top instrument and the computer workstation w/flat panel monitor. The dimensions and weights of the components are as follows:

Instrument Specifications HT Array Plate Scanner

Item
Parameter
Value
Weight
Shipping approx 216 pounds (98 Kg)
Uncrated approx 145 pounds (66 Kg)
Power
Voltage Current Line Frequency 100 - 240 V ~ 50 - 60 Hz
Working Environment
Temperature 59°F - 85°F (15°C - 30°C)
Humidity 10% to 90% RH
Clearance 2 in. (5cm) in rear
12 in. (30.5 cm) on left side

Plate load mechanism is in the left, which is why the required clearance is greater on this side of the instrument. The HTAPS instrument is controlled by the Dell Workstation, and must be located within six feet (two meters) of the scanner. The scanner is immune to normal laboratory and building vibrations, but the scanner should be installed on a solid, steel trussed or laboratory style bench. For best results, avoid close proximity to vibrating motors and compressors.

HT Array Plate Scanner - Trade-in Policy (Existing HT Scanner customers)

Customers who are conducting cross-comparison analysis need to complete the HTAPS validation within 90 days of the installation. Affymetrix support for the HT Scanner will expire 90 days after the HTAPS is installed.

Please use the original shipping crate for the scanner if available. Disconnect the power cord and scanner communication cable from the computer (the computer and monitors are not to be returned, since this contains your confidential data). At the completion of your cross-study validation, you will need to contact the Affymetrix Field Service Engineer (FSE). The FSE will contact the shipping company to pick up the instrument from a shipping/receiving dock at your facility. Due to the weight of the scanner, Affymetrix service personnel cannot physically lift the instrument. Please contact your facilities or maintenance personnel to move the existing HT Scanner. In addition, you will be required to sign and complete the decontamination process before the shipment can be returned. The Affymetrix FSE will supply this decontamination form at the time of the upgrade.

Thank you for choosing Affymetrix. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions regarding installation or training, please contact us.
